Starting the Year in Gunma

Why Gunma? A friend invited us to come over and do what the Japanese do on January 1st and 2nd! So here's what we did there. 🙌

Takasaki Daruma Festival

Daruma dolls are believed to bring good luck. So, most Japanese write their wishes on its left eye and keep it for a year. When a wish is granted, they write it on the right eye and burn the doll at the start of the new year.

Some people are writing their  wishes around
the big Daruma.

Genuine happiness in there! 😄

Sento

It was my first time to try Sento. As you know, public baths aren't a thing in the Philippines. It's even a no-no if you show your nakedness in front of others. It may be permissible for family and close friends but it still isn't a good idea. Well it was an amazing experience though. I realized that women are all equal.

Negotiating whether  it's okay to just
wear one-piece. 😅
And sorry it's prohibited to take photos inside.

Ryokan and Yukata

Ryokan is a traditional Japanese style hotel. You get to sleep in futon and wear a yukata. Sleeping on the floor is nothing new for me. I remembered sleeping in traditional mats with a mosquito net over me. It was really comfortable. I could sleep the whole day.

My twinnie. 😊

Yukata on the other hand is a casual kimono usually worn in Summer. There is a proper way to wear one which we overlooked and felt really embarrassed. Apologies to our students who taught us the how-to's before.

This one's a huge mistake because this style
is for a dead person.  The left collar should be on top. 😬

Hatsumode

It's the first prayer of the year for Japanese. Most people go to shrines and pray. They also get omikuji, a strip of paper where your fortune for the year is written. There are 5-levels of omikuji - that is the best to worst fortune. If you get the worst one, you have to tie it up on a string in the shrine. I got omikuji but it's all written in Japanese and nobody could translate for me 😂 Unless you go to popular shrines and temples like the one in Asakusa - Senso-ji temple, English translations are already available.

Omikuji also has dfferent styles. The paper is
rolled and hidden inside this figurine.

Fresh Green Tea and Monaka

I thought I would never like green tea but this one's really good. I guess it was au naturel. Japanese sweets are also really delicious. It has a different kind of sweetness. Monaka comes in different shape. This one's in the shape of Kannon-Sama.

This green tea is so natural I could smell fresh leaves.

Kannon Yama

It's a shrine located on a mountain in Takasaki City. It also boasts its 42-meter statue which they call Kannon-sama. This area reminds me of Mountain View in Cebu. It's overlooking the city.

Kannon-sama is a god in Buddhism.

The place is mostly visited by locals and it's
better that way.

What I realized from experiencing Japanese style New Year celebration is that events like this doesn't have to be loud, fun, and crazy. I mean in my country, welcoming the new year is too merry and noisy. But should I change our way? No, not. We can try both!

😍😍😍

Filipino Stores and Restaurants in Tokyo

For somebody who craves for Filipino food and snacks from time to time, here are the stores I frequent to. I can only share a limited perspective but solely based on my experiences. Read on! Filipino Stores 1. Asia Yaosho (Kabukicho, Shinjuku)  While they mostly have Filipino products, they also sell Thai goods. I think their prices are a little lower than the other Filipino stores I've tried. However, they have limited stocks and they often run out of items that I usually need, like Bearbrand. 😁 Credits: This photo is from this website .  2.  Ameyoko Center Underground Marekt (Ueno)   This market is heaven for Southeast Asians. They have a lot of varieties, dry goods, frozen meat, and even fresh seafood. There are also two Filipino stores in the area. They sell more items than Asia Yaosho but they are a bit pricey.  Credits: Photo is from this website. The market is underground. The entrance is on the side of this building at the center of this photo.  3....

Seven

Favor! As I was preparing to apply for this job, I felt that certain peace and assurance that this would go well. True enough, I got shortlisted for an interview. But it wasn't only an interview, there was also a written exam and a teaching demo. All happened in one day. Then the waiting starts. Two months to be exact. This position isn't always available. It's uncertain how many teachers the city would accept in a year. And a lot of us would want to get in. The perks and benefits that come along this direct employment are something foreign workers are longing to have. Then they called me and told me I was first on the waitlist. We were all put on the waitlist. I heard there were over a hundred applicants. Less than half got called for an interview. Then about twenty were considered for the position. But it was still uncertain how many of the twenty will successfully sign a contract. Another week passed when I finally received a mail. It was the contract package. Then they ...

But Before Summer

Today, I held back my tears as I was watching my student hitting his head while saying, 'Atama ga warui' which literally means 'My head is bad'. The more precise translation would be 'I'm stupid' or 'I'm dumb'. The students were using their school provided tablets to do some listening tasks and yet this particular student was just carelessly tapping the screen, opening random school apps. So I approached him and tried to help him navigate the school portal. And as soon as we could open his digital workbook, I left him so he could find the pages and the audio file on his own. I went around the class to help the other kids. But I would from time to time check on that student at a distance. Then not long, he started hitting his head again and repeatedly telling himself 'I'm dumb'. It was so painful to watch. But then suddenly one classmate sitting next to him stood up and helped him and another one followed. I was moved by such sight.  H...
